Overview
mag-single
mag-single - This is an 'improved' copy of the original DUCATI tool used to pull magnetos from the tapered shaft on Ducati OHC 4 stroke engines - [4 flats not 2]! There are two different magneto puller sizes available which were used on Ducati OHC singles. Because these engines are now 30 + years old and most have been apart, the old hard and fast rule that this model had this size and that model has that size no longer reliably applies. So to accurately determine which size tool is needed requires a bit of work. You simply pull off the primary side case and eye ball with a scale which size you need. The difference is almost ¼ of an inch so it should be easy. After pulling off the primary cover you can plainly see the brass magneto/alternator. There is no need to take anything else apart to get the measurement. Bolted onto the front of the magneto is the small steel front primary gear. Just behind that gear are the threads that you have to get a peek at and eyeball from above with a ruler. Line up the threads with your scale as best you can from one side to the other. The threaded portion is right behind the steel primary gear and is only about 1/8 long. The dimension you will measure for the smaller 55mm tool is about 2.160 decimal inches (or a bit more than 2 1/8 fractional inches) across the outside diameter of the threads. The larger 62mm tool will measure 2.430 decimal inches (or about 2 7/16 fractional inches) across the outside diameter of the threads. You will not be able to get easy access to this area unless you want to pull off the nut and primary gear, but to get a close estimate, just remove the primary cover. If you are having a hard time eye balling the ruler, you can also get the proper diameter/dimension by stretching a string around the threads and then measure the strings length using the formula D=C/ pi. Where D= diameter, C= circumference and pi = 3.14159. Therefore the smaller puller will have a string length of 6.78 inches and the larger puller will have a string length of 7.63 inches. This may all sound a bit of a pain to do, but what is really a pain is for you to finally get the time to tear into your engine and find that you guessed at the wrong size of the puller needed. Then it is stopping the project, repacking the tool, a trip to the post office, pay to send it back, then we have to do the same thing all over again on this end and you get a 10 day delay. That is a PITA. So please take the time and measure the threads so we can send you the proper tool the first time.
